Notes: The Laguna de Santa Rosa is located in Sonoma County, CA. It is the flood plain between the cities of Santa Rosa and Sebastopol. The Laguna has a wide variety of native plants and wildlife. The view in this oil is looking east from the High School Road.
The Laguna is an ever-changing panorama of colors with a mixture of everything nature offers – besides the plants and trees there is various types of fogs (ocean fog, ground fog, and sometimes a bit of both). The majestic Mt. St. Helena is off in the far distant background beyond the coastal hills.
The Laguna is also provides an overflow space for the Russian River during heavy winter rains. Then, the Laguna turns into what appears to the eye to be a lake.
The colors in this oil are winter ones. The muted colors are anything but monochromatic. There is rich palette to be seen for those willing to take a few moments to really see the beauty of this gift of nature.
Finally, the colors of the Laguna reminds me of the only two Mozart Piano Concertos that are in a minor key, Nos. 20 and 24. Dark. Rich, in color and textures. Drives the listener inward. New worlds are opened. (Suggest you listen to the 2nd movement of the 24th Piano Concerto).
